Biography and education

Janet Payne, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Finance and Economics. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Sam Houston State University and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Finance from Georgia State University. Dr. Payne served as Faculty Mentor for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Research Challenge from 2012 to 2024.

Janet has published research on various corporate finance issues in Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Review, Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Financial Education, and various other outlets. She holds the Financial Planning and Analysis Professional designations. Outside of work, she loves the Austin music scene and travel (almost) anywhere. Dr. Payne was the inaugural Graduate Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Quantitative Finance and Economics from 2020 to 2024.
