Dr. Natalie Freed

Biography and education

Natalie Freed explores intersections of craft and technology, investigating ways to open new pathways into computational and mathematical ideas. To this end, she designs creative learning tools that invite people to blend different modalities and practices: digital and tactile; painting and programming; planning and improvisation; invention and repair.

Natalie has worked as an educator, as an exhibit designer, and as a software developer. She has designed and led workshops on creative coding, algorithmic textile design, the mathematics of bookbinding, internet-connected artist books, and other integrations of technology learning and the creative arts. Natalie holds a PhD in STEM Education from the University of Texas Austin, a M.S. in Media Arts and Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a M.S. and B.S. in Computer Science from Arizona State University.
