Portrait of Mrs. Danielle Cantrell

Biography and education

I am a Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Coordinator in the Health Informatics and Information Management program at Texas State University. I bring extensive professional experience in health informatics, coding compliance, and electronic health record (EHR) systems into my teaching, creating a learning environment that connects theory to real-world healthcare practice. I am committed to student success and focus on building inclusive, supportive classrooms that prepare learners for meaningful careers in healthcare.

My professional background includes leadership in clinical coding, data integrity, and informatics education, where I have collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to improve documentation quality, regulatory compliance, and system workflows. I earned my Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential in May 2016, became a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) in Spring 2017, and obtained my AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer designation in December 2023. In my academic role, I lead clinical education initiatives, develop partnerships with healthcare organizations, and mentor students as they build confidence, practical skills, and readiness for the healthcare workforce.

I earned a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Houston–Clear Lake, where I developed a strong foundation in healthcare leadership, operations, and strategic management. Prior to that, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which established my expertise in coding, data integrity, and health information systems. My academic background bridges both the clinical and administrative aspects of healthcare, supporting my work in health informatics and education.

My professional interests focus on advancing health informatics education through applied, practice-based learning and promoting student success through inclusive, student-centered teaching strategies. I am particularly interested in strengthening clinical partnerships to expand experiential learning opportunities and better prepare students for the workforce. Additionally, I am committed to improving health data quality, integrity, and documentation practices, as well as integrating emerging technologies and EHR innovations into health information management curricula.
