Biography

Dr. Kostas Kalfas is an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at Texas State University. Prior to joining Texas State University, Dr. Kalfas was an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Tyler from 2023-2025. Dr. Kalfas received his Ph.D. Degree (2023) in Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Engineering from the Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. He holds a M.Sc. (2015) in Bridge Engineering from the University of Surrey in the UK, and a 5-year Diploma (2012) in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in Greece. He has published more than 30 papers in archival journals and conference proceedings. He has worked as a site engineer and as a bridge designer in Greece, Germany and the UK. Dr. Kalfas is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (CEng MICE) in the UK and a Member of Task Groups 1.1 ‘Improving Seismic Resilience of Reinforced Concrete Structures’ and 4.1 ‘Bearings & Joints’ of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).

Research Interests

Dr. Kalfas’ research focuses on the development, analysis, and design of response-modification devices for protecting structures against natural and human-induced hazards; enhancing the seismic resilience of buildings; applying alternative solutions in structural components; and improving the strengthening and stability of temporary structures. His research group integrates mid- and large-scale experimental testing with high-fidelity numerical modeling and analytical methods to advance the resilience and functional recovery of civil infrastructure through innovative response-modification techniques. Their work also explores the use of advanced monitoring technologies and modern construction methods—such as 3D concrete printing and steel additive manufacturing—to develop smarter, more adaptive infrastructure solutions.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Kalfas’ teaching philosophy is driven by fostering skills in communication, analytical thinking, and teamwork. He has adopted an open-door philosophy that creates an inclusive and comfortable environment inside and outside of the classroom. Dr. Kalfas’ teaching interests include structural engineering courses. He is teaching the courses of Structural Analysis and Design of Steel Infrastructure with Texas State University; while in the past he had taught the courses of Structural Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and CE Materials.
