Biography and education

Dr. Roger L. Booker, Jr. is an assistant professor of instruction at Texas State University. His interest lies in social and cultural education, with an emphasis on black male educational achievement and attainment from a historical perspective. His dissertation focused on military and civilian black male education in the Southwest from 1960 to 2000. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Maryland Global Campus. Master’s Degrees in Teacher Leadership from Lamar University and History from Texas State University, where he was awarded The Texas State Rising Star Award, and a Ph.D. in Education Leadership & Policy Studies with a concentration in Social and Cultural Education from The University of Kansas. Before acquiring his PhD., he was a soldier for 21 years, a high school teacher, and a coach in Texas. He has worked in academic athletic departments as a tutor, academic mentor, and academic coach at The University of Texas, Texas State University, and the University of Kansas. His writings focus on social and cultural issues of education and society. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Andre Booker Foundation.
