Biography and Education

Dr. Lester has been a licensed Physical Therapist since 2002 and is board-certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Prior to coming to Texas State University, Mark served in the U.S. Army for 26 years. During that time he developed extensive expertise in treating individuals with orthopedic and neurological injury and disease and individuals who had suffered major polytraumatic injuries. Mark has a broad range of clinical experience that includes patient care in combat environments, outpatient clinics, and inpatient and outpatient services in major medical centers to include being the Chief of Rehabilitation for the U.S. Army Burn Center, Chief of Physical Therapy Services for the 28th Combat Support Hospital, and the Physical Therapy Theater Consultant for Operation Enduring Freedom in 2007.
In addition, he has been an active research scientist for over 15 years and has numerous peer reviewed publications in areas of injury surveillance, human performance optimization, and burn injury rehabilitation. Since completing his PhD in Rehabilitation Science in 2014 where he focused his efforts in Neuroscience and Motor Control, his research efforts have focused largely on studying motor control across the adult lifespan in healthy populations and those with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, leveraging technologies to assist in the assessment and treatment of these individuals, and injury screening and prediction.
