Biography and education
Dr. Carter is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he teaches courses in data storytelling, media design and visual communication. Dr. Carter has received the 2024 Presidential Distinction Award for Teaching and the 2021 College Achievement Award for Scholarly/Creative Activities.
In 2022, Dr. Carter co-founded Texas Community Health News, an organization that trains students to produce data-driven public health reporting. In the organization's first two years of operation, staff and student work appeared in over 80 local, state and national publications.
Dr. Carter has a PhD in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in English Literature from The Ohio State University and a BA in Interdisciplinary Honors from the University of Texas at Austin. His research asks how technical systems such as social media platforms and web content management systems influence communication and knowledge production.
