Biography Section

Biography and Education

Dr. Jordan Stern is the Associate Director for Student Success in the Texas State University School of Music, as well as a lecturer of music education. He received bachelor's degree in percussion performance and music studies with teacher certification, and a master's degree in Music Education from Texas State University, as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Education degree from Boston University.

Dr. Stern taught band and music theory at Brennan High School and Claudia Taylor Johnson High School before accepting his position at Texas State. His research has been published in the Journal of Band Research, and the Oxford publication Sociological Thinking in Music Education. He also contributed a chapter to the GIA Publication Program Notes: A Comprehensive Guide to Band Directing, edited by John Denis. He has presented clinics and paper presentations at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention, the Texas Bandmasters Association Clinic and Convention, the Conversation on Music Education at Boston University, the 4th Encuentro de Escuelas de Musica in Colombia, The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education, and the Four States Band Clinic.

Dr. Stern is a passionate advocate for music education in vernacular styles. He teaches, coaches, and facilitates several country-western ensembles at Texas State, and is studying the Hawaiian steel guitar with Alan Akaka. His YouTube channel, @ProfessorHonkyTonk, features various educational videos on country-western music performance.
