Biography and Education
Carrie Crisp earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Texas State University and her Doctorate Degree in Jurisprudence at St. Mary’s University School of Law. Prior to joining the Philosophy Department at Texas State, Carrie was a criminal defense attorney for five years and spent a year as a bill analyst for the Texas Legislative Council. Before that Carrie was a server, a bartender, a leasing agent, and a writer. In her spare time, Carrie is working on two nonfiction books, a novel, and a screenplay. Carrie is an animal lover. A cat and dog mom, Carrie also serves as a neighborhood cat parent, providing food, water, shelter, warmth, beds, care, and love for a group of stray cats in her neighborhood.Teaching Interests
Since 2015 Carrie has been teaching Philosophy 1320: Ethics and Society. She teaches classes on Philosophy in Popular Culture, such as Philosophies of Westeros (analyzing philosophical issues in HBO’s Game of Thrones). Carrie has also taught independent studies in Applied Ethics, Women and Power, and Religious Studies. One of Carrie’s main focuses in her teaching is finding ways to increase student engagement through increasing individual student autonomy and choice in the curriculum. Carrie truly feels like she is “living the dream” being able to teach Philosophy to Texas States’ wonderful students!Research Interests
Carrie has a wide range of research interests. With a special interest in religion and its roles in society and politics, Carrie has presented research at the Oxford Symposium on Religious Studies three times and has been invited to return. Her other areas of research are: Applied Ethics, History of Philosophy, Philosophy and Popular Culture, Virtue Ethics, Ethics and Politics, Philosophy of Emotions, Philosophy of Grief, Ethics in Cancer Treatment, Philosophy of Death and Dying, Female Philosophers, Feminist Ethics and Feminism, Personal Identity, Wrongful Convictions, First Amendment Issues, and Ancient and Medieval History.Selected Service Activities
