Biography
Dr. Denise Blanchard is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State University and specializes in hazards research and application, risk communication/public education, energy resource use and management, natural resources, geographic education, emergency management, coastal zone management, economic geography; international trade; location analysis and business geography; finance; history of geography and geographical history.
Dr. Blanchard received her Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder, an M.S. degree in Economics from Florida State University, and a B.S. in Finance from Auburn University.
Dr. Blanchard’s recent publications focus on aspects of hazards and emergency management, environmental management, risk communication, environmental and hazard perception, K-12 geographic and environmental education, water conservation and policy, energy resources, and geographical history.
Dr. Blanchard’s most recent research and teaching interests include energy resource use and management, emergency management, geographical histories of the American environment, natural resource use and management, all aspects of natural hazards and disasters, risk communication, beach restoration and nourishment, coastal and riverine management, and environmental education.
Dr. Blanchard has chaired and graduated 10 Ph.D. students from Geography and Environmental Studies and served on 35 Ph.D. committees. She has chaired and graduated four Masters of Science (M.S.) thesis students and served on 13 Geography and Environmental Studies thesis committees. Dr. Blanchard has chaired and graduated 48 Masters of Applied Geography students (M.A.Geo.) and served on 33 M.A.Geo. committees. In addition, she has advised and/or served as an "outside" Masters chair for four students and served on 14 "outside" Masters committees for 17 students.
Dr. Blanchard serves on the Board of the Applied Geography Conferences-AGX, and is an Associate Editor for the Papers in Applied Geography journal. She has served as Chair of the Subcommittee for Education and Outreach for the San Marcos River Watershed Initiative. She is a former Director and Associate Director of the James and Marilyn Lovell Center for Environmental Geography and Hazards Research.
Dr. Blanchard was named Honorary Professor of International Studies by the International Studies Department at Texas State University. She has received 5 Favorite Professor awards from the Alpha Chi National Honor Society at Texas State.
Dr. Blanchard received a national Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award from the National Council for Geographic Education [NCGE] as well as the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University.
