Biography and Education
Melissa Walston-Sanchez is a senior lecturer for the Texas State University Health Informatics and Information Management Department. She teaches undergraduate classes and is the clinical placement coordinator. She began her career in HIM in 2009 and has been teaching for twelve years at Texas State University. Melissa is a lifetime Bobcat with both her bachelor's and master's degrees coming from Texas State University.Prior to joining the Texas State faculty Melissa worked as a HIM Supervisor and Outpatient Coder. In 2016 and 2018 Melissa was awarded the Texas State University College of Health Professions Achievement Award in Teaching. Ms. Walston-Sanchez holds certification as a registered health information administrator (RHIA) and has been a volunteer for AHIMA by serving on the CEE Virtual Lab Strategic Advisory Committee and Capital Area TXHIMA. Her research interests are health literacy and health disparities in rural, minority, and socioeconomically challenged communities.
