Biography
Raúl I. Rodríguez is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Texas State University. Research interests involve the implementation of mindfulness skills and mental performance concepts in the applied music studio. With that in mind Professor Rodríguez earned certification through the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults (MIEA) in November 2022 and earned certification in 2024 as a Mental Performance Mastery coach.
As an active musician with over 40 years of experience he has performed in various parts of the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Spain and Sweden. He is currently principal tuba with the Victoria Bach Festival in Texas and performs on BBb Bass with the San Antonio Brass Band. He has also performed with the symphony orchestras of Austin, Ft. Worth, San Antonio Philharmonic, Santa Fe (NM), Waco and the Orquesta Sinfónica Xalapa, MEX. He previously served as principal tuba with the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra in Colorado from 2001-2020 and the Garland/Las Colinas Symphony from 1992-1995. As a chamber musician he has performed with the Bluebonnet Brass, Breckenridge Brass, Capitol of Texas Brass, Hill Country Brass, Pinnacle Brass, Reunion Brass, SouthWest BrassWorks, and the TubaTzars Jazz combo.
In addition to teaching applied music, he also directs the Texas State Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, which has gained national prominence with their commitment to showcasing contemporary literature and standard transcriptions as well as world premier compositions in performances at regional, national and international conferences throughout the United States.
He has been honored with the Presidential Distinction Award for Scholarly/Creative Activities and the College Achievement Award in Teaching while at Texas State on multiple occasions. In 2005, he was initiated into Sigma Alpha Iota as a National Arts Associate. Prior teaching responsibilities include music theory (1995-2001) and serving as Assistant Director of Athletic Bands (1995-2007).
Professor Rodríguez is a published composer with Carl Fischer Music where his etude book, Low Blows for Tuba resides in their catalog.
He continues his involvement in youth education by dedicating time to presenting clinics and master classes in the public schools.
Professor Rodríguez received his musical training at the University of North Texas earning a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Music in Tuba Performance.
