Biography and education
Adah Toland Jones, Professor of Flute at Texas State University, is also Principal Flute with the Austin Opera, former Principal Flute with Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra and played frequently with the Austin Symphony. She holds B.M. and M.M. degrees and a Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a Doctor of Arts degree from Ball State University where she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Citation.  At Texas State, she was awarded the University Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities and was runner-up from the College of Fine Arts and Communication for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching.
 
As an active member of the National Flute Association, Dr. Jones’ activities include numerous performances, membership on the pedagogy committee, conductor of flute choirs, panelist for various presentations, adjudicator for competitions, and presenter of in-person and virtual warmup sessions. Her session on YouTube sponsored by the Burkart Flutes and Piccolos, Warmups from Flute Greats, has over 800 views. For the opening ceremonies of the 2021 National Flute Association virtual convention, Dr. Jones was conductor/producer/performer for the online mass flute choir that had participants worldwide. She has been a guest artist for flute festivals and universities throughout Texas, in Louisiana, New Mexico, Indiana, the U.K., and Dominica, West Indies.
 
Dr. Jones’ publication, The Flute Choir Method Book, is used by flute choirs internationally and she has frequently written articles for Flute Talk magazine. Her arrangements for flute choir as well as a transcription of the Trio, op. 119 of Friedrich Kuhlau for flute, clarinet, and piano are published by ALRY Publications.
 
Students from the Texas State Flute Studio have been frequent winners of the School of Music Concerto competition, have continued their studies in prestigious graduate programs, have been winners of various Young Artist Competitions, have been appointed to college and public-school positions, and perform with various military organizations. Dr. Jones is an artist for Burkart Flutes and Piccolos. Her principal teachers include Patricia George, Joseph Mariano, Paul Boyer, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
