Biography and Education

Gilbert D. Martinez is a senior lecturer and has taught Media Law at Texas State since fall 2003. He graduated with a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in New York in 2000. Martinez served as assistant director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication from 2012 to 2019. He also teaches a Free Speech/Free Press class for the Honors College and has led multiple Education Abroad Programs to Japan in 2019 and 2023.

From 1993 to 1997, Martinez worked as a newspaper reporter at The Jersey Journal in Jersey City, N.J. He worked as the weekend police reporter, general assignment reporter and the court reporter covering criminal and civil trials. Martinez was awarded a New Voices Fellowship from the Academy for Educational Development which allowed him to work as a legal fellow in Austin from 2000-2002.
