Biography and education
Gilbert D. Martinez is a professor of instruction in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and has taught Media Law at Texas State since fall 2003. Before graduating with a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in New York in 2000, he worked as a newspaper reporter at The Jersey Journal in Jersey City, N.J. He worked as the weekend police reporter, general assignment reporter and the court reporter covering criminal and civil trials. Martinez was awarded a New Voices Fellowship from the Academy for Educational Development which allowed him to work as a legal fellow in Austin from 2000-2002.
Martinez served as assistant director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication from 2012 to 2019. Since 2009, he has taught a Free Speech/Free Press class for the Honors College and was recognized in 2023 as the John R. Hood Honors Professor of the Year. As academic program director of SJMC Japan, a study abroad program to Japan, he has led multiple groups of students to Japan in 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
